The first in a series of posts about exploring natural Gabriola, today I present to you the Malaspina Galleries. Just 2 minutes drive from the ferry terminal (left on Taylor, then left on Malaspina and drive to the end) is a public beach with a very cool sandstone overhang.
Malaspina Galleries are pretty unreal. Water eroding the base of the sandstone rock has shaped it into a kind of permanent stone wave that rolls overhead. Below is a photo from the Gabriola Historical and Museum Society showing the galleries in 1903:
And here are my photos from this summer and fall. It’s a pretty neat place to visit if you happen to find yourself on the island!
thanks for taking Rob and I to Malaspina! In all the years I have gone to and fro from Gabriola Island to Decourcy Island I had never explored that area.
Waaaaay cool!
mom xx
I’m glad you liked it! It’s a really cool area. 🙂
I love investigating places like this and love the funny chalk faces…wonderfully mysterious place.
