Vegan Battle: Ice Cream!

03_02_2016_05

I’m on a Vegan Battle roll here! This is a particularly tasty one; ice cream. I definitely went through a phase as a vegetarian where I thought a glass of milk was disgusting but would then happily eat an ice cream cone made with dairy. I can’t explain it, I’m a hypocrite weirdo I guess. It seemed more logical to me to avoid dairy altogether and make the switch to vegan ice creams (especially when I went fully vegan, obvs). I first attempted to make the switch about 13 years ago but at the time couldn’t get over the “fake” taste of soy and rice ice creams. Well, we’ve obviously come a long way since then and I’ve gotten used to the different taste, plus the products on the market are much better tasting now than before. Some of these are even good enough to satisfy non-vegans, I swear it.

Here’s a round up of the 4 varieties available at my local grocery store. Almond Dream in Chocolate, So Delicious Coconut Milk Peanut Butter Swirl, Coconut Bliss Salted Caramel and Chocolate, and So Delicious Soy Chocolate Obsession.

Price-wise the Almond Dream is cheapest at $4.99, followed by the Chocolate Obsession at $6.39, Peanut Butter Swirl at $7.39, and the Coconut Bliss at a slightly ridiculous $9.29. It’s such a tiny container! I balked at the price but when you see the results you’ll see why it’s worth it.

Almond Dream Chocolate: This stuff tastes better than I remember, maybe because I’ve been drinking so much chocolate almond milk and loving it. The texture is pretty creamy and the chocolate is great. The colour on the carton is a bit sickly looking, but it’s more chocolately coloured when you look at the actual product. Definitely enjoyable.

So Delicious Coconut Milk Peanut Butter Swirl: I’m not sure what the deal is with this stuff but straight out of the freezer it is frozen hard like a friggin’ rock. I chipped a few bits off and it tasted ok but to get a proper spoonful I had to let it sit out for a while. Even after ample melting time I still found it hard to scoop, particularly when I hit a peanut butter swirly bit. The chocolate flavour was good, but the peanut butter wasn’t what I was expecting. Maybe I’ve been spoiled by peanut butter cups. Good, almost impossibly hard to scoop and eat.

So Delicious Soy Chocolate Obsession: I loved this one. It’s soft, chocolately, creamy and even has chocolate chunks in it. Chocolate everything! Don’t need to say much more than that.

Coconut Bliss Salted Caramel and Chocolate: I feel like this one already has an advantage because it’s salted caramel and that is an amazing flavour combination. Add in the fact that it’s super soft and scoopable right out of the freezer and the coconut milk is super creamy and delicious, suddenly you realize why it’s the most expensive of the 4. It’s AMAZING. I first tried this at a book club meeting and thought it was regular dairy masquerading as vegan. But is is totally vegan! Major A+.
