Local Exploring

I really love exploring Gabriola, there are so many trails, parks, forests, and beaches to discover and plenty of mushrooms, plants, animals and birds to see. I have a few guide books that I like to use for identifying mushrooms and wildflowers in my region, as well as a pamphlet by local Michelle Nelson to help forage for edible plants and flowers. Here are the books I would recommend if you are in the Pacific Northwest:

  1. Timber Press Field Guide: Wildflowers of the Pacific Northwest by Mark Turner and Phyllis Gustafson
  2. Mushrooms and other Fungi of North America by Roger Phillips
  3. Timber Press Field Guide: Mushrooms of the Pacific Northwest by Steve Trudell and Joe Ammirati
  4. All That the Rain Promises and More by David Arora
  5. A Field Guide to Foraging for Wild Greens and Flowers by Michelle Nelson
  6. Twenty-Five Walks on Gabriola trail map! (Info can be found online as well through the GALTT website)

Happy foraging!

  1. I’d love to move to Gabriola or any of the islands! Problem is hubby is terrified of island life in the earthquake zone! ;p Almost moved to Powell River though and I’m still working on it! I love your blog 🙂
