It’s top 10 Tuesday again! I’m working on new topics for the upcoming weeks, but thought it might be cool to do a top 10 countdown of my favourite authors as a series of posts. They would be in no particular order, I don’t think I could rank my top authors it would be too difficult! So today is part 1 of 10 of my top 10 authors: Octavia E. Butler.
I read my first Octavia Butler book, Lilith’s Brood, after a friend loaned it to me about 8 years ago. I thought it was very well written and the world-building was really captivating, and I guess you could say I was hooked. Since then I have read everything she has written that was made available, and also collected quite a few of her books. Mostly they are just old vintage paperbacks, including a few collectors items.
^ My ex was also a book collector and he contacted me one day to say that he had found an Octavia E. Butler first edition OOP copy of Patternmaster and he thought I would be interested in it so he grabbed it for me. Obviously it isn’t massively valuable but it is a neat edition to have in the collection and the story behind my acquiring it is sweet.
Also in my collection are not one, but two copies of the rare and OOP Survivor in paperback. I ordered a beat up copy off eBay so I could read it, but a few years later I went to a big book sale on Salt Spring Island and found a copy of the same edition that was in much better condition for just $1.
I’ve also got some hardcover editions; the copy of Adulthood Rites was found in a thrift shop on Gabriola that was going out of business, I happened to wander in on the day that everything was free. Score!
I have a copy of the first edition of Dawn that was white-washed and controversial. The protagonist in Dawn is a black woman but the cover featured an attractive white woman instead. It was later replaced with a cover featuring a black woman.
I also have the more recent collections Seed to Harvest and Lilith’s Brood (2 different editions), plus Parable of the Sower, Parable of the Talents, Fledgling, Bloodchild & Other Stories, Xenogenesis, and Kindred.
^ The 5 books in the Patternmaster series, including the out of print Survivor. Below are the duplicates and later editions.
So that’s my Octavia collection. 9 more authors coming at you soon ❤
