This week I thought it would be good to put together a top 10 of the books I’ve read by trans or genderqueer authors. I wasn’t sure I would make it to 10 but then it was easy! Julia Serano is one of my favourite authors, and Stone Butch Blues by Leslie Feinberg absolutely blew me away when I first read it. I also remember really enjoying Janet Mock’s memoir and though I haven’t yet read Chelsea Girls, Eileen Myle’s Inferno was a wild ride. Lots of great stuff here.
- Chelsea Girls by Eileen Myles
- Beyond Binary edited by Brit Mandelo
- She’s Not There by Jennifer Finney BOylan
- Gender Failure by Ivan E. Coyote and Rae Spoon
- Butch is a Noun by S. Bear Bergman
- Whipping Girl: A Transsexual Woman on Sexism and the Scapegoating of Femininity by Julia Serano
- Stone Butch Blues by Leslie Feinberg
- Gaga Feminism: Sex, Gender and the End of Normal by J. Jack Halberstam
- Rethinking Normal by Katie Rain Hill
- Redefining Realness: My Path to Womanhood, Identity, Love & So Much More by Janet Mock
“genderqueer”??? first time I have heard that. What does it mean or what has it taken the place of?
Genderqueer is the same as non-binary (identifying as neither male or female, or both, or a combination of genders)
Try “Gender Outlaw” by Kate Bornstein. Certainly blew me away!
I’ve read some Kate Borstein and really enjoyed it! I forget the title though. I’ll check out gender outlaw!
