DIY Bum Bag

A long while ago my serger broke, and in typical “me” fashion it took like 2 years to finally get it to the repair shop. And I did finally do this, but it then took me another long, long time to set up the machine again and actually USE it. I’m the worst! Ha!

But I did set it up and use it, FINALLY, and here’s the proof. It’s a bum bag! I desperately needed some kind of comfortable, hands free bag to wear while on shift to hold my narcan, phone, and inhaler. The narcan kits we are given hang from a belt loop on a caribeaner, but are pretty bulky and tend to swing around a lot which is annoying. Plus the loops on the case break pretty quickly and then they are harder to carry around. I’ve been using a fanny pack but then I end up with another strap in the way when I have to go to the bathroom and am also juggling keys, phone, and radio. Enter the hands-free pouch!

I lined it with the custom fabric I had printed with a simple hand design. Instead of a strap there are two loops that you can thread your belt through, no straps to juggle and the loops are reinforced so they are less likely to rip out. The zippered top makes it more secure than a pocket which is also helpful (dropping and losing things is crummy).

It’s been a while since I’ve sewn a zipper, but amazingly I still remember how.

I think it turned out pretty well! It’s just the right size to hold my things without being bulky, and I have enough fabric to make a bunch more to list in the Etsy shop. And did you like that little fox pin? Well there are still some availableย right here!

  1. You did a great job!! I have never been able to do that. I’m not crafty.
I don’t mean to be nosy, but you mentioned it: you carry Narcan? Are you an EMT or a nurse? I’ve never had to have Narcan, but I’m on Suboxone now and I use to use Naltrexone before that. (I had a bad opiate addiction) So I am just curious. You don’t have to say if you don’t want to.
