Weaving Workshop

One of the other workshops I attended for the Gabriola Isle of the Arts Festival was Weaving Without Boundaries facilitated by Kim. In the workshop we learned how to use a small cardboard loom to weave in a circle to create a small pouch with a flap. We were also able to experiment with the larger scale looms, and were given a small foamcore and pin loom with wire warp string to make a small woven broach.

Some of the larger looms brought in for us to check out. I want one soooo badly.

This little cardboard loom is so simple and perfect for making an itty bitty coin purse! I chose a simple black and creme colour scheme and wove in a bold stripe.

After completing the pouch and weaving in the ends, I soaked it in water for about half an hour then let it dry flat. It turned out pretty well, weaving in a circle never occurred to me and it’s so simple. I love the look of the Beetlejuice-style stripe!

I wrapped a few of the crystals from my most recent Moon Box in the pouch and I’m really happy with the final product! I love the Isle of the Arts festival. There are so many amazingly talented artists here on Gabriola and being able to attend an affordable series of workshops to learn new skills is such a great way to meet locals and explore the arts. Plus it’s sooo fun ❤

  1. I just got a Schact (made in Boulder, CO) Mighty Wolf. I’m love, love, loving it. I also got a spinning wheel. I made my own hand spindle but as soon as I started I got hooked and han spinning wasn’t fast enough. I’m going to use some of the stuff I’ve spun to weave some fabric. HAVE FUN!! If you really have the bug but can’t have a larger loom those little crickets and table top rigid heddle looms are cool.
