I’ve got 2 weeks to catch up on today! I haven’t been up to much as my time off from work is winding down, but I did finish a few books I’d love to share. I, at long last, read my copy of Caucasia by Danzy Senna and now I’m obsessed. It was one of the most engrossing and intelligent novels I have read in a while; Birdie was an incredibly well developed character and the plot and pacing were excellent. I can’t believe I waited so long to finally pick it up!
I also devoured Diving into the Wreck 1971-1972, a marvelous collection of poems by Adrienne Rich. This is the first of her work I am reading and I loved it! It would be hard to choose a favourite, I enjoyed all of them, but especially liked Living in the Cave. Here’s the first few lines:
Reading the Parable of the Cave
while living in the cave,
black moss
deadening my footsteps
candles stuck on rock-ledges
weakening my eyes
After the Adrienne Rich, I read The Break by Katherena Vermette, the book I will be discussing on May 1st for the Read Along I’m hosting. Has anyone else picked up a copy? I enjoyed the way the story unfolded from multiple intertwined perspectives surrounding the same incident. More about The Break on May 1st!
I followed up The Break with 13 Ways of Looking at a Fat Girl by Mona Awad, which I liked at first but by the end felt was pretty underwhelming.
Books I’m currently reading: Difficult Women by Roxane Gay (yassssssss!) and I’m still chipping away at Ancillary Mercy by Ann Leckie.
Hmmm Caucasia sounds very interesting – I think it might be a good book Club book??
Yeah it would be great for that!!
Thank you for sharing and ispiration. Both are new for me 🙂
Thanks for looking!
