The week in books! This was a slow week for reading due to the long-awaited arrival of my shipment of tarot cards. I ended up packing hundreds of decks to ship out and it took me almost all week. I did wrap up my re-read of The Fifth Season (loved it) and made it through the first book in the new stack, Gods of Jade and Shadow.
1. Gods of Jade and Shadow by Silvia Moreno-Garcia. I really liked this one. It is better than Mexican Gothic, in my opinion, though when you compare the two a lot of the characters are very similar; Casiopea shared a lot of characteristics of Noemi, the protagonist from MG. She also dealt with her cousin as a major piece of the plot (so did Noemi), and struggled against her controlling grandfather, the family patriarch (there was also a controlling grandfather in MG). Despite similarities in the characters between both books the story was quite different and I enjoyed it a lot. The ancient mythology woven into a semi-modern fantasy worked really well and it had a lot of interesting adventure. It would make an entertaining movie or mini-series. Recommended!
The Jazz Age is in full swing, but Casiopea Tun is too busy cleaning the floors of her wealthy grandfather’s house to listen to any fast tunes. Nevertheless, she dreams of a life far from her dusty small town in southern Mexico. A life she can call her own.
Yet this new life seems as distant as the stars, until the day she finds a curious wooden box in her grandfather’s room. She opens it—and accidentally frees the spirit of the Mayan god of death, who requests her help in recovering his throne from his treacherous brother. Failure will mean Casiopea’s demise, but success could make her dreams come true.
In the company of the strangely alluring god and armed with her wits, Casiopea begins an adventure that will take her on a cross-country odyssey from the jungles of Yucatán to the bright lights of Mexico City—and deep into the darkness of the Mayan underworld.Penguin Randomhouse
New booky wooks! A few more books arrived in the mail from a previous order I made (indigo gives you a birthday discount off one purchase and I went a bit nuts, natch) and a copy of Detransition, Baby arrived from my Mom 🖤 I’ve built up a beeeeautiful stack of books to get to ASAP and I can’t wait!!! So many new and super amazing looking stories. Seriously, how pretty is this pile?
And, as if that weren’t enough books for my hoard, I visited a little free library this morning and scored a lovely copy of The Three-Body Problem by Chinese sci-fi writer Cixin Lui which is a really amazing find. Perfect timing too as I was just putting together a stack of books by Asian authors worth checking out in light of the increase of violence against Asians in the news recently (gross, why). Lots of great books to share, I’ll post soon.
